Uli Kunz 2

About

The first encounter with the underwater world made a lasting impression on Uli Kunz: At the age of 8, the young boy fearlessly entered a freshwater lake in southern Germany only to leave seconds later, screaming, after a sudden appearance of a pike in muddy water… but the fascination of that hidden world was too big to prevent him from trying it again! Since then he has done more than 1.500 dives all over the world, mostly in cold waters.

Uli studied marine biology in Kiel, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden. He lives near the Baltic Sea, where the water is still cold and muddy, but much saltier compared to the quarries in South-Germany! He holds a Master’s of Science in Biology from the University of Kiel, specializing in Biological and Physical Oceanography, Zoology and Ecology.

Having completed a special education to become a certified “Scientific Diver”, he has carried out diverse research projects underwater. In the Arctic, Uli dove under thick pack ice; off the Canary Islands, he investigated pilot whales and found the giant squid instead; in Norwegian fjords, he explored cold water coral reefs; in Mexico, Uli documented several cave-diving expeditions, exploring the underworld of the ancient Mayans, bringing to light human remains and pottery.

As an avid sailor, Uli traveled on various vessels and works as a filmmaker for documentaries about the oceans. In total, he spent more than one year as a skipper on a sailing ship in European waters as well as off the coast and barrier reefs of Mexico and Belize. Uli is a professional underwater photographer; his pictures are published in various magazines like National Geographic, GEO and ScubaDiver. He is a specialist for dark places, where no sunlight ever enters. Transporting torches into underwater caves to illuminate submerged walls, chambers and stalagtites makes Uli look quite festive as he carries out his special photography…
