Interview with Lorenzo Bensi

– Please introduce yourself

I am Lorenzo Bensi, a Fineart Landscape Photographer. I was born and raised in Piacenza, a small town in the north of Italy.
Photography is to me synonymous of peace; by using very long exposures, I can eliminate the human subject, even in very busy places, so that only its traces are left. Through my photos I try to communicate: a sense of Calm, Silence and Melancholy. I want the viewer to enter my world, which is dark but also, peaceful and somehow timeless. I would like to be able to transmit what I feel while I shoot: inner peace. Everything around me stops, and I enter a universe of my own, without people, without noises, without time.

– How did you get interested in photography?

I think I have always been interested in every art form and particularly in photography. I always looked and admired my father’s photographs. He was a professional wedding photographer.
I liked to take pictures on holidays and try shooting with my father’s film cameras; but it was in 2014 that I really got into photography, when I bought my first digital SLR an “old” Nikon D300s with the 18-135mm kit lens. After about a year of practice with that camera I had the opportunity to buy a Canon 5D MKII, a beautiful camera which I still use as second body. I also bought a cheap ND1000 filter and from that moment I fell in love with long exposures and black and white.

– Do you have an artistic/photographic background?

I don’t have any photographic education. As a photographer I am a self-taught, so over the years I have learned from the mistakes made and tried to improve my techniques and my workflow.

– Which artist/photographer inspired your art?

There are really many great photographers who inspired me and who continue to do it every day with their images.
However if I have to mention a few specifically, I think the two photographers who have inspired me the most are without a doubt Ansel Adams and Michael Kenna, both for their way of approaching landscape photography.

– How much preparation do you put into taking a photograph?

I do put a lot of preparation into taking a photograph. I like to study a place as much as possible, to try to understand it better. I often go to the place I want photograph days before, even without the camera, and look for a composition or an interesting subject in order to be ready when the light and the weather will be favorable. I also prefer soft or flat light with a cloudy or foggy weather as I think they perfectly match with my photographic style.

– Could you please tell us something about your technique and creating process?

I always shoot my images in RAW Format, and I usually use the Adobe Suit for processing my pictures. Much of the work is done on Lightroom, and the remaining part in Photoshop that is mainly used for the final export of the image. Each file has its own processing, but the working method is more or less always the same. It’s more about dodge and burning, working on contrast and emphasizing the light spots. Currently I am using a Canon 5DsR and a Canon 5D MKII as second body, with three lenses and a bunch of filters from Nisi.
I often print my images for clients or for myself and I always use Epson printers with Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta paper.

– What do you do in your life besides photography?

I have several passions besides photography. I enjoy hiking, camping and traveling to new places with my truck, I also love watching movies and tv series at home or with my friends, and playing videogames. I have a great passion for rock and metal music, so I try to go to the concerts of the bands I like.

– What future plans do you have? What projects would you like to accomplish?

I am currently writing a book that will conclude one of my photographic project. Besides that, in the coming years I would like to be able to visit as many places as possible, to produce new images and to discover new places and cultures.
