Interview with Laszlo Gaal

– Please introduce yourself

My name is Laszlo Gaal, I’m a Budapest based commercial colorist, but my favorite hobby was always photography and I started to explore other kind of visual arts because of my work and interest.

– How did you get interested in photography?

When I was a child I received an analog film camera. I don’t know why I got it from my parents, but after I received I took it everywhere and tried to get to know how this little box – that can freeze time – works. I understood none of the technical side, but that curiosity what I carried with me all my life.

– Do you have an artistic/photographic background?

Yes, my father was a musician at the opera, but our family never worked with visual arts before. So I was the first to explore visual arts as a teenager I watched a lot of movies.

– Which artist/photographer inspired your art?

Sebastiao Salgado for sure. His images made me realize how much a single photo can tell about someone, something. Before him I thought photography is a limited tool compared to cinema, video, but now I think it’s at the same level. Also Steve Mccurry’s life made an impact on me not just his photos, but the background stories of his life.

– How much preparation do you put into taking a photograph?

Of course I went through different phases. When I was a kid I was very cautious about taking photos because I know it is expensive. When I received my first digital camera I was trying to explore different techniques as much as I can so that was a “more click/less thinking” period. Now I’m trying to always shoot like if I would be shooting on film, even if I’m on digital. This makes me think twice and look at the image more. Also it’s easier to decide, if this is really the good angle, time, place to shoot that image? For this series in the span of around four months I spent 107 days, 615kms of walking, 1734kms of commuting to finish the the photos.

– Could you please tell us something about your technique and creating process?

For this series I was using a Fuji X-T3 camera with different set of ND filters. So from the technical side everything was shot on a small sensor size, but to be honest sharpness is excellent with this X-trans sensor. If I’ll be able to continue this project I might step up to medium format, or for a few shots maybe large format film. Post processing is done in Capture One and resizing and dead pixel removing is done in Photoshop.

– What do you do in your life besides photography?

My main job is grading commercials which is already more than interesting for me as I’m working on many visually interesting projects. One other thing I started this year is working with old analogue tools to create glitch art.

– What future plans do you have? What projects would you like to accomplish?

My two big projects this year was starting the Timeless photography project and starting my video glitch art. For the photography project I would love to set cities as goals every year (2-3 cities could be done in a year) and continue as long as I can.
